Question:
A certain metal alloy contains 20% iron, 35% nickel, 35% tungsten and
the rest is copper. How many kg of copper are contained in 100.01 kg of
the alloy?
Solution: 10.001 kg
Sketch:
The whole alloy is 100%, so "removing" the iron, nickel, and tungsten, the percent copper is 100% - 20% - 35% - 35% = 10%.
Since we know that 10% of the alloy is copper, so .10 * 100.01 = 10.001 kg.
