Special Options for Continuation into Graduate Work in Biomedical Engineering at UNCBiomedical Engineering involves the application of science and engineering to problems in biology and medicine. Examples include the cardiac pacemaker, computerized imaging, the artificial heart, and the quantitative modeling and simulation of physiological systems. Two major areas of Biomedical Engineering are Biomedical Materials Science and the application of Computer Science techniques to biomedical problems. The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Carolina is part of the School of Medicine and offers only graduate degree programs. Undergraduate students interested in Biomedical Engineering should take either the Biomedical Materials Science or the Computer Science track in Applied Sciences. An optional fith year M.S. program is available in Biomedical Engineering. Under this program, qualified B.S. graduates of the Computer Science track in the Curriculum in Applied Sciences can complete work for an M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering with one additional summer and academic year of study. To be eligible, students must complete the requirements of the Computer Science track for the B.S. degree in Applied Sciences with a QPA of 3.0 in all required courses in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics and who have selected undergraduate electives including Biology 11, 11L, and Biology 45. Complete information is available from the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Medicine. The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Medicine at UNC-CH has also made a special option available to B.S. graduates of the Biomedical Materials track in Applied Sciences. Specifically, an M.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering can be earned in one summer and one academic year following receipt of the B.S. in Applied Sciences. This option is available to students who have earned a QPA of 3.0 or better in all required courses in Applied Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics and have selected undergraduate electives including Math 128, and Math 129. Students interested in these special options should consult with the Department of Biomedical Engineering during their junior and/or senior years.
